  • THE Police Force has introduced new uniforms and insignia for senior officers that will start being used from May 1, this year, the Commissioner of Police (CP- Finance and Administration), Mr Clodwig Mtweve has said. Mr Mtweve told a press conference today that the new uniforms have been designed to suit different occasions and working environment.

He was speaking on behalf of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr Said Mwema. “We believe that a presentable appearance by members of our staff will have a positive effect on the perception of ordinary people towards the force,” said the police commissioner.

Officials say the new uniforms and ranks structures are part of efforts by the Police Force to modernise and meet needs of its members of staff. He said that the new uniforms include a special mess kit for senior police officers. Others are a fatigue dress, working dress and combat, that will be used for special operations by all the staff at all levels.

The changed insignia include that of the rank of the IGP, CP, Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCP), Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police (SACP) and Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP). Meanwhile, Mr Mtweve has reiterated the force’s commitment and determination to enhance efficiency and to fight graft within the force.

He acknowledged that the force is still disgraced by a few members of staff who have unethical conduct. He noted that such characters are not only a public nuisance, but they also taint the image of the force.

“We will not hesitate at all to take stringent measures against those proven to engage in corrupt practices. We call upon the public to help in revealing those involved in scandalous pursuits,” he remarked. He said the police force has, for instance, been conducting seminars involving its staff at different levels to enlighten them on corruption-related matters.
