THE company that will be contracted to supply natural gas for vehicle and domestic use will be named today, the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) Marketing and Investment Director, Mr Dismas Fuko, said yesterday.
Mr Fuko also said that under the agreement with the Pan African Bank, two stations to sell gas for vehicle consumption should be ready by July this year. “In the initial programme we aim to have the two stations to convince people to change their cars to using natural gas,” he said.
Mr Fuko said the work to choose the most qualified company among eight which have submitted their bids will be finished today. The Director was speaking to members of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy and Minerals when they visited the Tanzanian and Italian Petroleum Refining Co Ltd (Tiper).
According to research dome by TPDC, using gas to run a car is 50 per cent cheaper than petroleum or diesel. The cost of converting a salon car is about one million shillings. “Our calculations show that if a car is using 10 litres per day, the one million shillings used to convert the car into using gas will be recovered in just six months,” said Mr Fuko.
The Director said that Kilimanjaro Kempinski and Movenpick hotels had agreed to use natural gas for cooking. The chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee, Mr William Shelukindo, said they would convince the government not to change the use of the company’s premises.
“Tiper has 123 hectares, it is better that they are left under its ownership as there is a great hope of finding oil in our country. It will be easier to use the area for the oil activities as it is close to the ocean,” said Mr Shelukindo. The government and Oryx have equal share of 50 per cent of Tiper’s ownership. Tiper’s refinery plant has not worked since 2000 when oil refining activities were stopped.
