MIGRATION FROM ANALOGUE TO DIGITAL TERRESTRIAL BROADCASTING IN TANZANIA
After a long discussion from 2005 on the
status of the broadcasting industry in the country, and highlighting the
current analogue system broadcasting and its shortcomings, It
underscored the need to adopt digital broadcasting because
of its immense advantages brought about by technological developments.
From that advantage, the United Republic of
Tanzania plans to switch off Analogue broadcasting and switch
on Digital broadcasting at 12.00 midnight of 31st December, 2012.
In order to attain at this stage, the
following has been done by the Government:-
1: Issuing licenses to three Multiplex
Operator (MUX), who will handle all the signal distribution functions. The
multiplex operators are now laying infrastructures to enable the take-off of
digital broadcasting.
The licensed Multiplex operators are;

Media Tanzania Limited

Agape
Associates Ltd
·
Basic
Transmissions Ltd (BTL)
Multiplex
operator is any person who provides the technical infrastructure
for the terrestrial dissemination and bundling of digital programs and
additional services contained in a digital data stream. In simplified terms, a
multiplex operator is a network operator for digital terrestrial broadcasting,
in particular DVB-T (digital terrestrial television), as well as mobile
television based on broadcasting technologies.
Inorder to avoid any
inconveniencies that might arise when analogue system is switched – off and
switching – on Digital broadcasting, TRA
staff and members of the public are
adviced to buy decoders from above mentioned Multiplex Operator before 31st
December, 2012 the electronic apparatus that will enable them continue to enjoy
the TV broadcasting at their homes.
