  • CREATION of a conducive environment for investment and use of information and communication technology (ICT) in the country will remain a permanent item in the nation’s development agenda, the Minister for Communication, Science and Technology, Dr Shukuru Kawambwa, said in Dar es Salaam today.

In a keynote address at the opening of the EUROAFRICA – ICT Workshop, the minister underscored the role of ICT in development, describing it as a critical pillar of a modern economy.

“In this fast globalizing world, the way of carrying out business is changing at a very high speed with the new technologies taking a centre stage,” the minister pointed out in a speech read on his behalf by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Dr Naomi Katunzi.

He said that the government and the private sector in Tanzania have no choice other than embracing ICT. “Today, an important development imperative is the creation of knowledge-based economies, taking direct cue from the creation of knowledge-based society.

“ICT is fundamental to ensure the attainment of both the knowledge-based society and economy,” the minister explained. The two-day workshop has been jointly Meraka Institute of South Africa and the Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology (DIT).
